Life Update: Someone Else is Publishing my Novel Idea/ Job Interview

This has been a huge fear of mine since I started writing novels: What happens if someone publishes your good idea before you have a chance? Welp, that day has sort of become a reality for me.

There’s a few major differences but I just read an excerpt for a YA novel that has a very similar premise to my first novel (that has been in the revision state since it got rejected in 2017).

Immediately, I started to hyperventilate and freak TF out. I had a lot of interest in the story but the plot needed a lot of tweaking. I imagined that with a whole other book out there about the same thing, I’d have even more trouble ever getting it published.

But then I read the excerpt and had to remind myself to calm down. Chances are, there is already a story published similar to yours. The difference is, they’re written by two different authors. So your story won’t be just like anyone else’s. Unless you copy it or something obviously.

Your writing journey is your own. You can’t force or rush things. Fact of the matter is, I wasn’t ready to write my novel, which is why I struggled with it. Now that I’ve read more and written another novel and a few more short stories, beginning of novels, I think I’m more prepared to revise novel #1.

I’m not going to beat myself up for not getting it published before this YA book comes out because me and that author are on different paths. She already has an agent and a novel out whereas I’m still searching for representation. I know it’s all going to come together for me soon, I just have to keep working hard.

In other news, I have a second interview for a full time job today! My first interview last week went well and they were all on board with my dreams of being a writer and having that career on the side while working for them.

They asked me questions about my novels, my family, my hobbies. It was an awesome interview and for once, I didn’t feel like I had to lie and say I hated writing and that I was going to dedicate my entire being to this position and only this position.

I’m hoping things go well today and I leave with a full time job secured. This is going to solve so many problems for me. I’ll have insurance, money for food/clothing and my dog’s health care, I’m hoping to start saving up for my first car as well. Obviously I want my own place, too, but Idk how feasible that will be because of the area and the fact that I have a large pitbull. Most places don’t want pets and those that do have restrictions that don’t allow pits.

But I’m determined to make it work, even if it means I have to get a part time job on the weekends. So that’s my life update. Things are going really well and hopefully they stay this way!

  1. Thank you for writing this with a positive note at the end. Keep writing . . . and get that book published! Why? Because even though the premise may be similar and the tropes used may even be n early identical, you are YOU — unique — and absolutely fabulous! ๐Ÿ™‚ Best regards to you, Juliana.
